“All I Want Is You”

16 Jul

This is my favorite R&B record spinning right now (as always it changes weekly).  It’s a very smooth and vulnerable record, delivered with an excellent vocal performance that encompasses a 90’s R&B feel.  I believe Miguel is going to be a star and potentially and shift the crooner landscape. He reminds me of Raphael Saadiq but with a larger mass/pop/ eclectic appeal.

Janelle Monae is coming…

12 Apr

Sorry this post is long past delayed but I have had an eventful past few days.  Thursday evening (4/8) I got to see a new artist, Janelle Monae, perform live at the Highline Ballroom with a childhood friend.  I have never seen a show like this before! She represented  and weaved together a mix of “afro” soul, funk, alternative rock, new wave, pop, & pure energy. It was quite the entertaining experience & she is certainly not in the mold today’s traditional urban artists.  She brought an energy from start to finish that left everyone there feeling a certain kind of way.

If you get the chance, I’d encourage you to go see her perform live because it is that good.  The band was impressive, the video visuals added another element, & theatrics only drove home the she really is unique.  It refreshing to see artists who still bring 100% to a shows & rewardtheir fans for coming out.  Get familiar with her music because she is going to take the music industry by storm.  Let me clear there is no one else in her lane right now!  I’m just glad I had the opportunity to witness another star in the making.  When I’m asked to describe her, I say think, a female James Brown combined with Erykah Badu’s musical prowess and you got this remarkably eclectic artist, Janelle Monae.  Here are some photos & videos I was able to capture & find on the net.

Here are some videos which put it all together:

Usher – “OMG”

Usher is back… this will get lots of video & club play.

This might be the most musically visual R&B song written in some years… I think it’s one of the instances where the song carries you from beginning to an end with a destination in mind.  Every now and again, an artist puts out something that enables you to “see the music” instead of contently listening. Then again maybe its 11pm on a Monday, I’m tired, and just seeing things. You be the judge but I do love this record!

“How Does It Feel”

8 Mar

The man who brought us the video below has fallen mightily from grace & proved some of my assumptions wrong:

Yesterday, he was arrested for trying to solicit fellatio for $40 from an undercover officer in the West Village.  The irony is that in the video above, he was rumored to be on the receiving end of that very act.  This video was game changing and forever cemented his status as a sexual icon in history.  I can recall many a female reveling in his gestures & lyrics.  Women of all ages would swoon over his voice and he once had the career trajectory of a young Al Green.

When this video came out he was the topic of discussion in beauty shops & barber shops in urban America, albeit for different purposes. His arrest is notable for a couple of reasons.

1. We assume artists (especially R&B acts) are gifted with women

2. Why is he paying for it? I’m sure thousands of fans would do it for free and he should not have to be “tricking”.

3.  Given how much he has let himself go, perhaps wooing women has become a bit of an obstacle for him.  See the picture below:

“D’Angelo Today”

I wonder if the female officer asked him upon his arrest, “How Does It Feel?”
